Challenge- Day 1

Nov 26 2007

Published by Squirrel under --are ya in?

The Honey Bear and I walked Beasley up to the bus stop for 8am.  After B’s departure, off we went.  It was a lovely 45 minute walk.  However on my favourite uphill path, Honey Bear took off into the bush.  She did not return.  This is not unusual as she is frequently distracted by her nose and any strange animal scent.  After deer I’m guessing as they are her weakness.  I continued on my walk trusting that she would quickly catch up.  Nope.  I continued on my route home, calling for her the entire way, knowing she would hear me and get her ass in gear…. nope.  I approached home, expecting her to meet me.  Nope.

After preparing a cup of my brilliant, new, hot, very best ever coffee to take with me to go recover dog, there she leapt up onto the deck.  Frosty, panting and oh-so-happy to see me.  Silly beast!

Great walk after several weeks not, despite disobedient wandering companion….

Coffee Me, Baby!

Nov 25 2007

Published by Squirrel under it's all about me, dammit, must.spend.money.

This is the best- and no one is paying me to say so!!  Years ago we used a French Press.  It made a great cup of coffee, but I considered it something of a pain in the ass.  We then graduated to a drip, which after the frigging around with the FP, the no muss no fuss was a huge relief as it automatically brewed me a good cup ‘o joe every morning.

Well, with all the family coming in, I was searching our small town for a carafe in which to serve many cups of coffee (so that I wasn’t perpetually brewing pot after pot), but to no avail.  What I did find, however, was this lovely 12 cup perculator.

Freaking awesome!  Rich, hot, hot, hot coffee!  It is the best!  And it takes up less space on my counter!  Makes. Me. Happy.

Extending a Challenge

Nov 25 2007

Published by Squirrel under --are ya in?, get off yer butt

Well, tomorrow marks the return of some degree of structure with the kids returning to school and we adults returning to our work days.  Part of this structure involves my instituting some form of daily physical activity.  Any routine of fitness has gone to pot over the past month and the end of American Thanksgiving (and endless chowing down) usually marks a renewed commitment to healthy living in preparation for the inevitable Christmas binge and the impending New Year.

So, the Challenge:

I invite any of you who might saunter through to join me in a commitment to daily physical activity.  It doesn’t have to be gruelling, it just has to be done.  30 minutes, at least, every day.  I will be keeping a log here and I look forward to your comments regarding your own activity.

The point of this is to keep me going, knowing there are others to keep me honest….  perhaps it might get someone else out there moving, too!

Starting now takes the pressure off the New Year.  It makes room to have perhaps a set of more inspired resolutions, than ”get off yer ass!”

Exhausted… in a happy way!

Nov 23 2007

Published by Squirrel under it's all about me, dammit

It’s been a great couple of days.  Certainly we are all (adults, anyhow- the kids have too much to do, to waste time eating!) suffering with extended bellies and in some cases, a little over hang…  Everyone leaves tomorrow- save for Uncle Richie, who takes off on Sunday- so we have one more day of T’giving festivities.  Today, The Turkey Bowl!  It will get up to a balmy -5C today, the coldest Bowl yet!  Leftover Bird today, too, so more time to relax…

The Institute of Gratitude

Nov 21 2007

Published by Squirrel under get rid of it!, gratitude freaking rocks!!

Today we await the arrival of ‘The Americans’ (and one Brit, of course).  Beasley is up early in anticipation of seeing his favourite cousin today and possibly being picked up from school early (he and Guga-roo will take the rest of the week off, as this is not a holiday for us).  I’ve been incredibly organized and while all I had hoped to accomplish in these last couple of weeks didn’t quite get done, it’s good enough…  everybody has a comfy place to sleep and the toilets are clean!   While I had hoped to complete my ‘Autumn Purge’ by Thanksgiving, I made good headway and with a little more effort, we should be heading into the New Year with a few less pain-in-the-ass projects hanging overhead.

I digress….. leading up to this much hallowed season, I have read many posts.  Most of the posts written this week, of course, have incorporated the sentiment of gratitude.  What has impressed me as I read, is that evident in the majority of these posts is how thankful many are every day of the year.  Yes, everyone appreciates the mood of this season and is sparked into articulating a feeling of gratitude, but in the many references to family, friends and experience the tone of fundamental thankfulness runs through.  Deeply.

What I have come to learn, and I will admit, only recently, is that despite all the excesses, the stress and the striving, who I love and what I love, to do and to be, are right here under my nose.  I don’t have to look very far to know what is right and good and perfect.  To move forward in this knowledge, is to move forward in contentment, in peace with what is and therefore what will be.

Inspiration abounds!

Wish List to Santa!

Nov 21 2007

Published by Squirrel under must.spend.money.

This is it.  This is all I’m asking from Santa this year.  I saw them in the mall and FELL IN LOVE!  I’ve never owned a pair of UGG’s and never really wanted to, honestly.  Until these.  The Ugg Tall Adirondack! Size 9.  Santa, can you hear me?  I have been a very good girl…

Chachi People!

Nov 20 2007

Published by Squirrel under all about 'dese kids...

Five year old engaged in ongoing war with the indefatigable Chachi people!  Apparently, in the last battle he and his army were defeated.  Though he is enlisting Obiwan and Luke to aid in the next inevitable confrontation….  Chachi?!  This child has never even heard of Happy Days!

Keeping Me Hip!

Nov 20 2007

Published by Squirrel under bloggity, blog, blog

I missed the AMA’s, so thanks to Anne at My Tiny Kingdom for introducing me to Soulja Boy.  The videos were very helpful!  I’ll have to ask my nine year old if he’s familiar- up here in the sticks, he may very well not be…  He’s only now begun singing “My humps…”- ugh!  Despite how very funny it is to hear him singing this stupid tune, I am trying hard to break him of it!

Meme-Happy Thanksgiving!

Nov 20 2007

Published by Squirrel under bloggity, blog, blog

I came across this interesting link for memes.  I actually had to Google memes to find out what the hay…  anyways, with ‘The Americans’ arriving tomorrow and The Season upon us I thought I’d include this lovely selection.

randomness…feed your mind and your blog week of November 18:
Giving Thanks With Turkey Day so near, lets blog about it!

1. How do you celebrate Thanksgiving?   This is the third year hosting ‘The Americans’ from Seattle (formerly Northern VA)
2. Do you cook or go out to eat?   I cook, baby!
3. What has been the best Thanksgiving for you? I loved Thanksgiving when I first moved to The States in the mid-nineties.  We celebrated at mother-in-laws: huge parties!  Since moving back here and in-laws to Pacific NW, this recently instituted tradition of celebrating in Canada -when no one else is- is pretty cool!  The worst?  My first ever Black Friday.  I was denied a Macy’s card there in front of an army of frantic, frustrated and frayed American shoppers!
4. What are you thankful for?  This incredible family! My team!  I can’t put into words how much they mean to me!  I now wake up everyday and literally say ‘thank you’!
5. Any special traditions you do?  Oh God… The Freaking Turkey Bowl!  Three grown, soon to be middle aged men running after a football.  These bro’s have been doing this since they were little boys- let’s hope no one hurts themselves!
an extra sidedish this week:
1. cranberry sauce or gravy? Both!  Are ya crazy?!
2. white meat or dark?  White for me.  Dark for Filipes.
3. yams, with or without marshmallows?  Yams without. Marshmallows?!?  Please!  Maple syrup!!
4. stuffing or no stuffing? Must have stuffing!  Must have Stuffing!
5. pumpkin pie or apple pie?  Doesn’t matter.  Will be apple this year.
till next time…Happy Thanksgiving!

This is Addicting!

Nov 19 2007

Published by Squirrel under get rid of it!, it's all about me, dammit

I’m not typically an addictive personality, but this blogging thing is crazy fun!  I like the reading and I love the posting.  Strange in that it doesn’t really even matter if anyone is reading them!

‘The Americans’ (and one Brit: sis-in-law) arrive the day after tomorrow and as yet have nowhere to rest heads comfortably- today’s task!  A day of emtying, organizing, rinse, repeat…..  I have to be done by tomorrow as I need to return my mother’s Dyson- a friggin’ dream, by the way!

We also have over a dozen old bananas to transform into banana bread.

If you are looking for neat prezzies- baby and otherwise, I just visited a great site right up my alley: product reviews by real moms!  Mamas Like offers great gift ideas, particularly given the season.  Be sure to check it out!

Most of our obstacles would melt away if, instead of cowering before them, we should make up our minds to walk boldly through them. -Orison Swett Marden

Think of yourself as on the threshold of unparalleled success. whole, clear, glorious life lies before you. Achieve! Achieve! - Andrew Carnegie

As a single footstep will not make a path on the earth, so a single thought will not make a pathway in the mind. To make a deep physical path, we walk again and again. To make a deep mental path, we must think over and over the kind of thoughts we wish to dominate our lives. -Henry David Thoreau
