I am alone in my home.

Here’s what I’m doing:

Oprah is on- repeat (background drone, only). Blogging (just approved new design- positively yum!).  I’m on my own for supper(ack!), waiting for water to boil- for my whole wheat penne.

And best of all, eating.  Favourite appetizer-salad indulgence: four slices fresh mozzarella, 1 monster leaf of basil out of garden pot, roughly chopped, drizzle of olive oil, fresh ground pepper, drizzle balsamic vinegar.  HEAVEN!

God, I love my kids!

(I enjoy my own company so much more because of them!)

And so the great news.

Our closest, largest town is getting an independent standing Starbucks. Yes! It’s only taken… I dunno how many years, but just as everybody has had Starbucks out the ying yang and everyone is starting to complain about the quality of the supermegaestablishment-yes, even The Man loves his coffee-conformistbottomlinebeforequalityfourfackingdollarsa cuponeoneverycorneroverabilliontrillionsold coffee stops, we are getting one.

Sure, now, just when mom ‘n pop coffee bars are making a gasfireplacecozychairscreativeinspired
non-conformistlivemusicliquorlicensenanaimo-hempseed-bar resurgence, we are finally getting one.

Sure, for the past two years, we could go to the new Starbucks kiosk in the Safeway… but… it’s… Safeway.

And whether it’s in our closest Safeway or standing independently on the Cranbrook fastfood strip… it’s still a fucking hour away!

Hello mom ‘n pop… vanilla soy latte and a nanaimo bar please. And make that with a shot of Bailey’s…

It’s Pizza Nite on the icy, cold and windy magnificently scenic western slope of the Canadian Rockies!!  Officially.  Every Thursday.  The end of week has begun in earnest.  Sure, tomorrow is Friday… there will be work to do.  But Pizza Nite Thursdays lets us get a mental jump on the weekend.  Oh these little games we play…

Roll it like you mean it, little pizza boy. 

This is our favourite night of the week.  Hands down.  Daddy Filipes creates his famous BBQ, whole wheat crust delights.  Built to suit.  This being daddy’s specialty, of course there is no recipe to speak of, outside of whatever he needs to toss into the handy dandy bread maker.  The rest happens by the seat of his flannel lined khakis. 

He does, of course, have help:

Load up the sauce and hot banana peppers.  Some fresh chopped garlic and jalapenos, baby!  Make it so nobody will want to get within a 15 foot radius of me.

39!  Yesterday!  In honour of the last birthday of my thirties I ate THREE- count ‘em, one, two, THREE- of these delicious little devils! 

After seeing the Williams-Sonoma cupcakes on Oprah again last week, given that for nine, they cost a mere $59(!!), I put in my request.  How it’s possible, I don’t know, but I scored even better!  My little troop of lovelies managed to whip up these, a dozen of the sweetest, moistest, yummiest most precious cupcakes ever.  Yeah, take that W-S!  You know what you can do with yer overpriced, undersized… no, not really.

It’s only slightly disconcerting… another year past.  Another year older.  But, really.  Upon not even particularly serious reflection, things are too good.  Life with this bunch of miscreants is better than ever and I am loving everyday!  It is turning out that every year gets better than the last, so I have every reason to believe that 39 is going to be a total trip!  Bring it on, baby!
