(not only was I able to transform a pile of snakey, lopey yarn into a thing of beauty but I was also able to transform the colour… I am truly amazing. The true colour is a deep navy blue, accurately represented in neither of the photos above?!?!)

 I want a pair of long johns out of the above thick, ribbed knit.  Two scarves. One grey (also not accurately represented?!?!), one navy, 3 skeins a piece.  Knit 2, purl 2 and on it goes.  Crazy cozy! 

Now on to hat for most precious Christmas Elf!

OK, so not so knitty.  Crochet-y…  scarf for the mo-in-law. Isn’t it lov-a-ly?  Just a little double crochet diddy I managed to work up over the past- ohhhh- 2 or 3 DAYS!  It took some doing getting back into the swing of things since last winter.  Now on to some knit, ribbed(hmmmm…) beauties for a couple of the bro’s-in-law.  If I thought this one took a long time….

OK, my crochet skills are going to be put to the test…

My eldest son, my darling Sally… Beasley Bean. He has made a request of his mother. The beauty of his request, is that it was made assuming his mother to have no limitations… lovely boy.

“Mom?”

“Mmmm?”

“Can you knit me an elf hat for next week?”

“Mmmmm…….. sure…” She said, hoping her hesitation was not interpreted as fear by this surprisingly sensitive and intuitive creature. Because, that’s what it was, God knows!
Next week? The Christmas play! An elf hat? I don’t do hats! Let alone a hat that will be on public display. An audience, no less. OK, so of course no one will even notice… but, cheese Louise, I’m the scarf lady. Doesn’t he know this? I’ve knit or crocheted a friggin’ scarf for everyone we know. They’re our Christmas tree garlands for crying out loud! Over and over, around the tree, lengths of delicate angora triple crochet.

I’ve NEVER knit a hat. I’ve NEVER crocheted a hat. I do scarves. How does one go from an endlessly long, straight, ever so simple and repetitive exercise to one that goes ’round and ’round, increasing, decreasing, and worse, ending in a perfect point- in one week? Argh!
However, for this beautiful child who innocently assumes that since his mother makes such lovely scarves, oh so many lovely scarves, of course she can make some freakin’ hat. I mean, its an elf hat, for chrissake. Elves have small heads?!?

In conclusion, as the loving, dutiful and, needless to say, very good mother, I will set aside my own petty and ridiculous insecurities, my profound fear of failure and dreaded dropped stitches, and honour this simple childhood request. For him, I do it. An elf hat it shall be.

I have seven whole days, after all!
