A Good Mostly Week

Mar 14 2008

Published by Squirrel under a very good mother... really!, zip

It’s been a great week. Despite, or perhaps because of, HIS relations having to cancel their travel plans, we have been uber-productive. Work, on top of. Both of us. School, for a few different reasons, is going like gang-busters. Both of us, as well as Zip when it suits him, are making serious progress in addition to staying really quite motivated.
No doubt taking this new opportunity to get shit done before next batch of visitors arrival. Next Friday. Seven days.

This string of nice weather has probably helped. I was even able to get myself and the kids out for little adventures a couple of afternoons.

Speaking of Zip: Loveable. Zany. Sensitive. Middle child. And therefore, by his estimation, utterly unloved with no one EVER who wants to do ANYTHING with HIM. EVER. Earlier in this, a week for the recordbooks in fantastic, attentive mothering, as Sally, Fidge and I watched photos downloading from camera to laptop (OK, wha?!?!?), Zip… feeling rejected, dejected and stuck in the pit of middle child ignoredom, jabbed me hard in each temple with his little thumb.

Jab. Jab. “Hmmmph!”
Looking up from screen, “OK, Zip. That was just weird.”
Averting mindless gaze back at screen, I hear from somewhere under my lovely chenille sofa blanket,

“My thumb was just up my butt.”

“………………..,” I’m still speechless.

Fearing potential of deep seated emotional middle child issues, have made a firm pact to be sure to spend special Mommy-Zip time with my dear, nurturing early psychotic tendencies, Zip.

It must be working. I have not had butt infused thumbs jabbed into my temples since.

A tremendous weekend… consumed by skiing. In a good way.

Saturday was our usual ski day, with the boys in Nancy Green, preparing for the Zone Finals in Golden next day, Sunday.

Typically, Fidgey and I spend our Saturdays alternating between the warmth and creamy comfort of hot chocolate in the lodge and screeching like banshees as we putt-putt down the bunny slope. This day. This day. This day was… blissfully different.

1. It was warm enough to be without jackets and mitts.

2. Sky was huge, glorious with no clouds. Only delicious, warm sun.

3. Fidge skiied alone. No harness. No me. Her own two legs. Her own very happy self.

4. Dad spelled me. I got to ski alone on real adult runs. Many times!

5. It’s a 15 minute trip up the chair. I sat ALONE. I stretched out. Sun. Burned. Aaaaahhhhhh. As good as any pool chair at a Mexican resort!

********************

Sunday. Repeat. Today we wake up at the Ramada in Golden. It’s cold. But clear, clear. Perfect day. The boys are geared for races. Who knows what will become of the Fidge.

Sun beams. It gets perfect warm. Fidge conquers chair. Twice. Screeches on the Magic Carpet. For her entertainment and my annoy-ment only.

Boys achieve personal bests with Zip winning silver in the Invitational portion of race (includes Calgary team); wins gold in the Zone. Of all the five year old ski racers- that would be 8- from Fernie to Revelstoke, Zip is the fastest. Whoooooo-oooooooooooooooooooooo!

Unfortunately we had to hear about the first place finish over the phone while sitting in line at the Drive Thru. We thought all the awards had been given out. Clueless, though tired, parents had no idea there was another category of awards to be had. Talk daddy down. Aaaaaaaaaaarggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhh!
Sally was incredibly gracious about his brothers wins. A fantastic brother.

Keep on going, and the chances are that you will stumble on something, perhaps when you are least expecting it. I never heard of anyone ever stumbling on something sitting down. -Charles Kettering

Most of our obstacles would melt away if, instead of cowering before them, we should make up our minds to walk boldly through them. -Orison Swett Marden

Think of yourself as on the threshold of unparalleled success. whole, clear, glorious life lies before you. Achieve! Achieve! - Andrew Carnegie

As a single footstep will not make a path on the earth, so a single thought will not make a pathway in the mind. To make a deep physical path, we walk again and again. To make a deep mental path, we must think over and over the kind of thoughts we wish to dominate our lives. -Henry David Thoreau
